Its that time of the year yet again, where NAFA 3DD students showcase their hard work and craftsmanship in their graduation show. Just last year, it was our graduation show, the time passes by all to quickly. This year's theme of the graduation show is 'The Awoken Flock'.
Separated into 2 different galleries, Lim Hak Tai Gallery and Gallery 1 making the flow of space easily accessible and also was able to hold the crowd. In Lim Hak Tai Gallery, the exhibited works were from the Object Design Major, Jewellery Design Major, BA(Hons) 3D Design: New Practice and BA(Hons) Spatial Design, And in gallery 1, the exhibited works were from the Furniture design major, Interior design major, Exhibition design major and Environmental design major.
We decided to walk the less crowded gallery at that time first which was the Lim Hak Tai gallery, where we saw quite alot of interesting designs from the 2nd Batch of Object design student's works!
The space of the exhibition seems a bit tight, and we couldn't really see the overall exhibition when we first stepped in.
The first booth that we had find it quite unique was Wabi Sabi done by Lee Jin Quan. Making used of the materials Brass and Copper, he had created a set of boxes that were finished by nature itself or by man , the metals became tarnished and wrecked, giving the vessels a different look rather than having that perfect and shiny metal box that we all are so familiar with. The entire series allowed us to appreciate and respect the tenacity of the materials, breaking away from the usual perception that metal has to be clean and shiny.
Next work was done by Livia Kurniati. Her project, Stele was based on exploring on water hyacinth as a main material used for the end products. A series of kitchenware that consist of 3 different kinds of coasters and a bowl. These products are made to adsorb heat and designed using traditional pattens such as weaving.
Stich with Lovers, a reciprocal wedding favor was designed by Anthony Lee.
This idea was something we thought was one of the most commercially thought ideas. As simple as just using acrylic and laser cutting tools, people are able to bring home wedding favors in a simple carrier and yet able to send their wishes back. Maybe people with think oh there is the reception book where people can sign on, but Anthony designed an object that can make it more fun for the guest as well as more touching for the happy couple.
The top part of the handle is able to be placed on a stem where when all the guest at the table has done so, it creates a flower like pattern.
Moving on, we went over to the 3D New Practice exhibit. there were only about 5 students taking the degree program, but we only 2 of the works caught our eye.
Your Bathroom Essentials by Wong Shun-Hui Elaine recreated the traditional blue and white rice grain pattern bowls into contemporary bathroom accessories. She chose to use the bowl as part of her idea was for its beauty of its translucency. We thought that this was unique as well as making use of traditional bowls that Singaporeans are very familiar with to create something unique and delicate. With the different bumps and dents in a bowl can be useful for a soap dish or a toothbrush holder.
Choco Indulge by Wong Tingren Flynn, a self indulgent, dining experience that allows the diner to be able to get the value of chocolate by using means of interpreting its psychological, materiality and sociological aspects. Using the Marble as the main material, he creates a personal space where a person can enjoy and in a way be in their own world while eating chocolate.
What we liked about his works was how simple his products were. They could be placed at any high class restaurant, as it has a certain kind of elegance to his design.
Moving on to the other gallery, we took a look at something that we are more familiar with. Furniture Design! The students were given 3 topics to choose from, 1: Materials, 2: Small spaces and 3: Budget furniture.
Odette, a modular desk and shelving system designed by Felizia. She choose to design for small spaces.
Making use of materials such as wood, metal and corian, these elements are mounted onto the wall with horizontal support, producing a
clean and uncluttered feeling of simplicity and lightness in material
because of the reduction of the structure to the essential elements. Her design idea came from the ballet bars.
Which
also fits nicely into today Singapore's home context of small living
space and maximizing possible spaces. Odette allowed multiple combination
and configuration that can be use in private, professional and
commercial spaces.
Another design for space saving was Montura done by Camille. Her idea came from the relationship between a parent and child. she designed a kind of rocking stool that can be used to store the children's toys under the stool, and has another layer that can be detached for the child, allowing the parent and child both able to play together and It enhances the parent and child's relationship as well. the only thing that we would change from this design is definitely the colors of the furniture. Having it to be something that parents and children would be drawn to, the colors do not stand out enough.
One of the works that we found to be really interesting and using an uncommon material was POLy Bench and Lounge Chair by Muhammad Danial Bin Jasmin. Using Styrofoam and Thermoplastic to create furniture not everyone would be able to think about it. But for this designer, he put what was learned from his internship into good use! even though the furniture looks chunky and odd shaped, but it is really light and stable. "it is able to be jumped on, and it wont give way" was what Danial said to us. it is really an idea that can be redeveloped and use to make furniture.

Last Saturday was the opening day of NUS, Department of Industrial Design graduation show. It is held at the National Library at Bras Basah. It's seem like it was broken down to 3 sections, the conceptual on the left, the production methods in the center and the medical on the right. The show has a very light feel to it, minimal props allowing the works of the graduating students to stand out prominently.
Our favorite piece of work during the graduation show, Charcoal things, there is this subtle humor to it and we felt it was nicely done. It has complimented the concept so perfectly of eliminating the form of charcoal that we were all once so familiar with. Not only that, it has blended into their own surrounding without attracting any unwanted attentions or disrupting the balance of the atmosphere of the surrounding.
Chindogu, A Japanese art of inventing unorthodox solutions to solve daily problems. If I were to translate it in, it will be quirky. Personally I really like Watermelouth the most, allowing me to enjoy my watermelon without breaking it to create an additional piece to hold and throw.
Rekindle, a simple rocker with the mechanism to allow paraplegics the ability to feel movements and sensations that were once lost. The swinging motions encourages intuitive exertion of trunk muscles needed to train balance for everyday activities. So simple but yet so functional.
My niece will definitely go gaga over this, Little Chef play set. It is quite interactive and enriching product that teaches the children, the simple action of cooking and train their motor skills. When we were there, the spatula was already missing, maybe some kid liked it so much decided to bring it back home to cook some sumptuous meals for his/her friends. *joke*

Visted the Lasalle Show 2013 Exhibition on Thursday. As usual, the Lasalle graduation show is always brings in the crowds and the event was made very extravagant on the opening night! with confetti and all. As the event was held at Lasalle school, the exhibition space was widely spread out and easier to walk around to view different departments!
As you can see, the crowd does not look as packed as the previous 2 graduation show we been to.
We started with an area we are more familiar with first which is the Interior and product design exhibition. the signage for the Design word was really well designed, it was very drawn using tools that designers would use to create their design.
Walking around the exhibition, we realize that what they used to put the works on, was very familiar. It was similar to how we used to design our graduation show last year! only they are using plastic crates instead. *Note: We are not saying that they copied the way our graduation show was done. it was just a familiar sight.
Check out how interesting this idea is! "a melted puddle of pencil" was a really cute idea.
One thing about Lasalle works, their product finishing is FANTASTIC! was super impressed with how well their finishing was for all the products.
Walking pass this exhibit, what caught our eyes first was definitely the thumbnail head! but that was not the only interesting thing we saw on that space. If you look below the head, there is this book, that is completely made out of MIRRORS! this designer, carved the back of every mirror to create this book. it was brilliant~
Saw this model house, that we really liked. if we could build our own house, we would probably want it too look like this! the design was very current, as there are more houses being designed now to be very opened and have a wide space.
This next work, was just questionable. How do you get someone to hire you when there was no name cards or any contact details?
Found the furniture design exhibition, it was not a very big exhibition, and we must say, it was not very impressive. we saw works that were from a few years back that was shown at FDAs.
See how detailed the Lasalle students are in their work? they even have mini human figures in their interior space.
Once again, totally amazed by how well done their models are for their products.
The following 3 products are ones that really caught our attention!
Nuovo, a portable bento box that is able to be flatten and fit into most bags. Made out of food grade silicone and plastics, its recyclable yet durable. This box is able to be placed into the microwave and a dishwasher just like any other Tupperware or bento boxes. Whats not to like about this product? we would want this product to carry to work as normal bento boxes just aren't as compact or collapsible as this one!
Stoodon, a travel cleaner is just what everyone needs! a design that people would actually use it in a third world country or an area where they do not get easy access to water. This product would help wash clothes as well as help save water and this would make it easier for older people, as they would not need to bend so much to wash their clothes.
Further down
the aisle were works from the Design and Media department degree
program, as mentioned before the quality of their work were brilliantly
crafted. Kudos to every single one of them.
Here below are a few that you should really take note of, if you guys are going to the show.
Word play using different shapes, angles and colors. all showing the word Craft. showing the audience that shapes and layers can make a word look different from every angle.
The one above was done by Donna Fonx, it is about teaching kids english through story and video animation. Personally we quite like it because firstly, it allowed the kids to be better in the command in English and also empowered their sense of creativity. Combined with brightly colored and friendly graphics, it make the series very absorbing and interesting to read. The designer herself was like her work, approachable and energetic.

The one above explored into the department of materials, on the right, were samples of material that had researched and come out with. To protect our environment is not just down to the job of the scientists, but everyone. Using the power of media, sharing the knowledges of the need of being Eco-friendly, being a designer is not about decorating or polishing item to makes it look better but, also at the same time solving problems or addressing issues.
A new way of work presentation? making them look like they are on those kind of newspaper racks where people can just take one to read before placing it back.
Tushaara Paul Vadekkel, did a a kit consisting of a series of 8 artefacts on tackling color blindness. She arrived at taking up this issue, because of her cousin who has colour blindness. Further research brought light upon the colour blind community's inability to successfully interpret the design of many things in their surroundings. That inspired her to touch on this topic. The kit even consist of the software to help designers to allow their designs to overcoming this problem. Further, allowing people who have color blindness to understand the message intended by each design.

Ninja turtle turned into apples?
Firstly, even though the each department had their own area for the exhibition, we still had trouble navigating our way around the show, as there weren't much information going around to let us know whether if this is under the product design, interior design or graphic design over at the diploma side. So we had some problem transiting from one to the next. Likewise, the designers weren't at their booth to talk to or introduced about their works. It felt as though it was the last day of their graduation show. Over at the degree side were much better, a couple of them talking and introducing their works patiently to those that stop by their booth.
But what really amazed us during the show were the craftsmanship of their works, The models were all done up nicely. Nice finishing, clean lines and great sanding. Lastly, we would also like to congratulate them on graduating. Great works, guys! Kudos to you all.
